MAMSA 2019 Orientation

MAMSA 2019 Orientation

30th March 2019.  By Natalie Ling and King Ho Wong

No wind blows in favour of a ship without direction.” This evergreen pearl of wisdom by Roman philosopher Seneca the Younger is indeed extra-applicable to those who struggle within their journeys to becoming medical doctors (i.e. myself). To me, med students are like plundering pirates, always looking to grab as much from the medical world as possible. For me, I’d always rely on MAMSA’s never-ending support as my sail, and orientation has always been the key to this treasure chest.

It is certainly easy to get lost within the unending realms of the daunting medical world as we venture, losing sense of direction and focus along the way. However, embarking on this new journey with fellow MAMSAsians also means that we meet comrades and fight alongside each other. This past Saturday during orientation, I had the pleasure of meeting our new batch of members. Seeing their fresh faces reminded me of myself, just two years earlier, where this full circle began.

As a new member of MAMSA, I wasn’t sure what to expect of this organisation/society. VESPAs. Check. 1,000 steps. Check. Merdeka night. Check. AGM. Check. My cloud of uncertainties dissolved through participating in various MAMSA events. The feels this family brings is subtle yet heartwarming. At the end of the day, what you’ll remember when you graduate (hopefully) isn’t gonna be the bizarrest of medical facts, but rather the relationships and memories you cherish. After all, we boarded a ship, not a submarine.

MAMSA Family of 2019

First, the day started off with a warm welcome by our president and vice presidents, followed by a brief introduction to our committee. There are some exciting things planned for this year indeed!

A quick word on our sponsors from President and Vice-President!

After this, we played some trivia about Malaysia, and of course, Malaysian food. Stomachs and spirits fired up, we then moved to the common area outside the lecture theatre for some fun and games. Led by our bubbly social representative, Seraphina Choong, the hall was soon roaring with laughter.

Trying our level best to remember everybody’s names…..

Working some endorphins into the excitement of the day.

The day was then tied off with some much-deserved free pizza, and a photo session. Click through to our Facebook post to see all the photos from the day!
