MAMSA x MUMedS Career Talk 2019

On the 19^th of January, MAMSA’s Training and Development (T and D) Department held its annual Career Talk, our first event of the year. Organised in collaboration with our fellow colleagues from Monash University Medicos Society (MUMEDS) Sunway, this event took place in Building 4 Level 2, Room 3, Monash University Malaysia, from 10am to 1pm.

We had 6 speakers who availed themselves to share in this year’s Career Talk. Kicking us off as the first speaker was Dr Lee Fatt Soon, who spoke on the specialisation pathway in geriatrics in Malaysia. Humorous and engaging, Dr Lee gave an insightful perspective on geriatric care, reminding us about the importance of balancing medical goals and the needs and wants of the elderly patient. Following Dr Lee’s sharing, we then had a heart-warming talk from Monash Malaysia’s pre-clinical physiology lecturer Dr Priya Pusparajah who shared with us her journey through medical school and how she made the decision to become an academic and lecturer. Up next was Dr Mohd Farooq Shaikh, who challenged us to look beyond working in clinical practice, encouraging us to explore the area of medical research.

We then had a simple but scrumptious lunch of rice with ayam berempah, sponsored by Monash University Malaysia to help fill our hungry tummies J

After lunch, we were very privileged to have our very own MAMSA alumni Dr Bryan Tan, who kindly took some time off from his annual leave in Malaysia to come and share with us about his working experience in Melbourne as an intern. Next, we had Dr Cheah Yi May, on video call, who is currently working in Perth as an intern, to share with us about internship options other than those offered by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV), specifically on the Junior Doctor Training Program (JDTP) which Dr Cheah is presently under. Last but certainly not least, we had Dr Sean Tan on video call, a current registrar under Monash Health, who only recently passed his FRACP exams. (Wooo!! Congrats Dr Tan!) Dr Tan, being one of 13 successful applicants (out of a total of 100 applicants (!!!)) who got accepted into Victoria’s Cardiology 2019 training program, presented us with an informative talk on the specialisation pathway in Australia, highlighting both its challenges and its highly valued rewards.

Every talk was followed by a short Q and A session, where members of the audience were given the opportunity to raise any queries and/or request further explanation on certain topics. All in all, the event ran smoothly J.

On behalf of MAMSA’s T and D team, we would like to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude towards our honourable speakers who have so willingly taken time off to share with us their thoughts and experiences. We would also like to thank MUMEDS for once again collaborating with us for this event.
